• British chartered trading company which controlled trade with India and China, backed up by British military forces. Chief agent of British imperialism in India in the 18th–19th century. (See: UCLA history)
• 1773 : Regulating Act establishes British Governor-General for India
• 1784 : India Act establishes Parlimentary oversight of the Company -- Duck | Google | Bing
• 1819 : Protectorate of Singapore founded and administered by the Company
• 1858 : British Crown assumes control over India. India Act revokes the Company charter.
